19 St James’s Street
Their flagship store has been home to cigars and pipe tobacco for more than 230 years – open for business since 1787, making them the oldest cigar merchants in the United Kingdom and one of the oldest in the world. The world-famous tobacco business at No.19 started with Robert Lewis until 1992 when James J Fox acquired the business, uniting two of the most respected names in the cigar world. Both companies now trade as JJ Fox (St James’s) Ltd. Long before the acquisition of No.19, James J Fox were formed in Dublin in 1881 and opened its first tobacco shop in London in 1947. They have also been running the cigar departments in both Harrods and Selfridges since the 1980s. It’s not just the cigars and the large walk-in humidor that has made this place something of sanctified ground notorious to cigar aficionados across the world. James J Fox has a large sampling room that is often packed with smokers from all walks of life, tourists to politicians, entrepreneurs to the common person. Along with this, cigar romantics are also free to visit the Freddie Fox museum to view some excellent cigar artifacts dating back as far as The Great Exhibition, with the most popular attraction being Sir Winston Churchill’s chair from when he was a patron of the shop.
